Questions about class action settlements.
Short answers to what people ask most after a settlement notice, a breach letter, or a news story.
Settlements and claims.
How do I file a class action settlement claim?
You file on the official, court-approved settlement website, which is named in the settlement notice and linked from each of our settlement pages. Most claims take a few minutes online, and some can be mailed. Check the deadline and whether you need proof of purchase before you start.
Does it cost anything to file a settlement claim?
No. Filing a claim in a class action settlement is always free. If a website asks you to pay a fee, or asks for your bank login or full card number to file, it is not a real settlement site.
Is this settlement legit?
Check that the settlement website matches the one named in the court-approved notice or the court record, and that it does not charge a fee. Every settlement we list has been checked against the official settlement website, the court docket, or an agency order, and each page lists its sources.
Why did I get a class action settlement notice?
Settlement administrators send notices to people whose names appear in the company's records as possible class members, such as past customers or people whose data was exposed. A notice means you may qualify. It does not mean you were sued, and you usually do not have to do anything unless you want to file a claim, opt out, or object.
What happens if I do nothing?
If you are a class member and do nothing, you are usually bound by the settlement and give up the right to sue separately over the same claims, but you may get no payment unless payments are automatic. Filing a claim, opting out, and objecting each have their own deadline.
How much will I get from a class action settlement?
It depends on the settlement terms and how many people file. Many consumer settlements pay a few dollars to a few hundred dollars per person, and payments are often reduced pro rata when many people file. Each of our settlement pages reports the payout tiers and any estimate from the official sources.
