The CertainTeed Fiberglass Horizon shingles settlement is open until March 2, 2030. If you own a U.S. building with CertainTeed Fiberglass Horizon shingles installed between 1995 and 2010, and the shingles show cracking, curling, fishmouthing, granule loss, or other premature deterioration, you can file for $40 per roofing square of damaged area, reduced for the roof's age, plus five more years of warranty coverage.

The case is Segebarth, et al. v. CertainTeed LLC, No. 2:19-cv-05500, in the Eastern District of Pennsylvania. CertainTeed disputes the allegations. Because the payment is prorated, older roofs recover less. Below: who qualifies, how the math works, and what evidence to send.

What the CertainTeed Horizon settlement resolves

Homeowners and building owners sued CertainTeed LLC in 2019, alleging that its Horizon brand asphalt fiberglass shingles were defective and failed prematurely, causing property damage and economic loss, and that they did not perform as CertainTeed's representations and warranty promised. The case was assigned to Judge Paul S. Diamond in Philadelphia.

CertainTeed disputes the allegations, and the court never decided whether the shingles were defective. The parties settled after mediation. The court held the final approval hearing on December 22, 2022, and approved the settlement on January 31, 2023, according to the official settlement website.

Unlike a cash-fund settlement, this is a claims-made program: CertainTeed reviews each roof and pays eligible claims directly, with no fixed total. CertainTeed agreed not to oppose $1,690,000 in combined attorneys' fees, costs, and incentive awards, paid separately from homeowner benefits. For other building product and warranty claims, see our guide to the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act.

Who is eligible for the CertainTeed shingle settlement?

You are likely in the settlement class if:

  • You own a building in the United States (house, condo, duplex, apartment, or commercial building).
  • CertainTeed Fiberglass Horizon shingles, made by CertainTeed until 2009, were installed on it between 1995 and 2010.
  • You are eligible under the shingles' limited warranty, which generally means the original owner or the first subsequent owner.
  • The roof shows Qualifying Damage: cracking, fishmouthing, curling, degranulating, or other premature deterioration caused by a manufacturing defect.

Not covered: CertainTeed organic Horizon shingles; builders, contractors, installers, and suppliers (unless the shingles are on their own home or building); CertainTeed employees; and claims already resolved by a judgment, a signed release, a cashed CertainTeed or insurance payment, or replacement shingles. A roof or section never previously claimed can still be submitted. If you bought the house from a second owner or later, the claim form says you are not covered.

How much does the CertainTeed settlement pay?

CertainTeed first measures the Replacement Area. If more than 5% of a roof plane shows qualifying damage, the whole plane counts; under 5%, only the damaged shingles count. It then pays $40.00 per square (a roofing square is 100 square feet) for that area, prorated for age:

InstalledWarranty (new)Proration
1995 to 200325 years to 30 years1/384 per month
2004 to 201030 years to 35 years1/444 per month

Our illustration, assuming each month in service reduces the $40 by the stated fraction: a roof installed in January 2008 and claimed in late 2026 has been in service about 224 months, leaving roughly half, or about $20 per square. A 25-square roof plane would then be worth about $500. A roof installed in 2002 recovers much less, under $10 per square. These are estimates, not official figures; CertainTeed calculates each claim.

If CertainTeed previously made you a written cash offer on a warranty claim that you never signed off on, you get the greater of that offer or the settlement amount. Damage that CertainTeed finds was mainly caused by improper installation is denied, though you can rebut that finding. Our guide on why payouts come in smaller than expected explains proration in more depth.

How to file a CertainTeed Horizon shingle claim

  1. Confirm the product. Check old invoices, the roofer's paperwork, or shingle markings to confirm Fiberglass Horizon (not organic Horizon).
  2. Get the claim form from the official settlement website's documents page.
  3. Gather proof: proof of ownership and the date you acquired the property, clear photos of each damaged roof plane, roof measurements, and proof of product identity. The claim form says a shingle sample is the fastest, and sometimes the only, way a claim can be processed.
  4. List prior claims: any earlier warranty or insurance claim, with claim numbers and amounts received.
  5. Submit by email to the address on the claim form or by mail to CertainTeed Roofing, Horizon Settlement Administrator, 805 W. 5th Street, Suite 7, Lansdale, PA 19446, postmarked by March 2, 2030.

Keep copies; submitted materials are not returned. The administrator may ask for more information, and not responding can forfeit the claim. For general tips, see how to file a settlement claim and when proof is required.

Key dates for the CertainTeed Horizon settlement

Claims are paid on a rolling basis because the settlement is already approved, so there is no waiting for a final hearing. The opt-out window closed in 2022, so class members are bound by the release and cannot sue separately over these claims. Because proration shrinks the payment every month, filing sooner generally pays more than filing near the deadline.

If your shingles do not qualify

If your shingles are organic Horizon, were installed after 2010, or you are a third or later owner, this settlement does not cover you. Your remaining options may include CertainTeed's standard limited warranty, your homeowners insurance for storm damage (see homeowners insurance), or state warranty and consumer protection law. The settlement notes that it does not reduce rights under a CertainTeed limited warranty for claims it does not resolve.

CertainTeed Horizon shingles settlement: common questions.

How much is the CertainTeed shingle settlement worth?

Eligible claimants receive $40 per roofing square of the damaged Replacement Area, prorated by the roof's age at 1/384 per month for 30-year warranty terms or 1/444 per month for 35-year terms, plus five extra years of warranty coverage. Older roofs receive much less than $40 per square.

What is the deadline for the CertainTeed Horizon shingles settlement?

Claims must be emailed or mailed and postmarked by March 2, 2030. The opt-out and objection deadline passed on November 22, 2022, and the court approved the settlement on January 31, 2023.

How do I know if I have CertainTeed Horizon shingles?

Check your roofing contract or invoice, ask the contractor who installed the roof, or look for product markings on a spare or removed shingle. The settlement covers only Fiberglass Horizon shingles installed between 1995 and 2010, not organic Horizon shingles.

Do I need a shingle sample for the CertainTeed claim?

The claim form says a shingle sample is the fastest and sometimes the only way a claim can be processed, because it proves the product and its condition. You also need proof of ownership, photos of the damage, and roof measurements.

Can I file a CertainTeed claim if I bought the house from the original owner?

Possibly. The claim form says original owners and first subsequent owners covered by the limited warranty can qualify, but third or later owners are not eligible. You must document when you acquired the property.

Who pays CertainTeed Horizon settlement claims?

CertainTeed reviews and pays claims directly through its Horizon Settlement Administrator in Lansdale, Pennsylvania. There is no fixed settlement fund; each eligible claim is paid under the formula in the settlement agreement.
